Canada receives protest from Russia regarding remarks made by its envoy about a deceased blogger during recent events - According to the foreign ministry, on Friday, Moscow lodged a formal protest with Canada over remarks made by its U.N. envoy branding a slain Russian blogger as "a vitriolic propagandist" and a promoter of hatred.

After Vladlen Tatarsky, a supporter of Russia's military actions in Ukraine, was killed in a bombing incident in St Petersburg last Sunday, Bob Rae, Canada's representative to the United Nations, made the comments.

The foreign ministry of Russia released a statement stating that it had summoned a high-ranking Canadian diplomat to express its strong objection to Rae's comments, which it described as "another display of the anti-Russian sentiment being cultivated in Canada."

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government is among the most vocal supporters of Ukraine. Rae's remarks came after Russia's U.N. mission complained about the lack of response from Western media outlets and international organizations over the death of Tatarsky, whom it described as a journalist.

Rae tweeted, "He was not a 'journalist'. He was a vitriolic propagandist, a spreader of hate and misinformation with a criminal record. Russian journalists are either in exile or in jail."

Russian investigators have charged Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old resident of St. Petersburg, with terrorist offenses related to Tatarsky's killing. The blast also left 42 others injured, according to Russia's health ministry.
